An injured Jewish driver lost control of his car and swerved onto a sidewalk after he was pelted with rocks by Arab rioters during a violent protest outside the walls of Jerusalem’s Old City on Monday morning. The incident took place just outside Lions Gate, close to the Temple Mount of Jerusalem’s Old City. Israel Police said that stone throwers attacked the car that was travelling on Jericho Road and that as a result, the driver lost control of his vehicle and veered off the road, hitting several people. After the car stopped, more stone throwers approached it and they continued to pelt it, opening the doors in an attempt to attack the driver and another male passenger. An Israeli police officer runs to rescue an injured Jewish man after his car swerved off road near Jerusalem's Old City after it was pelted by rocks on May 10, 2021 (Credit: OLIVIER FITOUSSI/FLASH90)An Israeli police officer runs to rescue an injured Jewish man after his car swerved off road near Jerusalem’s Old City after it was pelted by rocks on May 10, 2021 (Credit: OLIVIER FITOUSSI/FLASH90)

A police officer arrived at the scene moments after the car swerved onto the sidewalk and he fired warning shots into the air to disperse the mob as they tried to get to the car’s occupants. Warning: This tweet contains graphic content.

Several Palestinian youths were injured when the driver lost control of his car, Palestinian media said.Police forces in the area dispersed the rioters and were working to locate the suspects. The car’s occupants, two men aged 27 and 28, were lightly injured and received medical treatment, according to the Magen David Adom (MDA) ambulance service.”We arrived at the scene and saw the men standing outside the vehicle while the police guarded them. The injured suffered from light injuries and the effects of tear gas,” senior MDA medic Malka Lock said.”The two injured men were taken to the hospital for treatment and they are in a stable condition. Due to the chaos in the area, we had to take a longer route to the hospital, instead of going the fastest way.” Lock added.”We came down two streets that should have been secured by the police, but there was no police presence,” Said the driver who had stones at his car. “We had stones thrown at us during the whole time we were driving on the street, I was talking with the police on the phone during the whole thing and told them that they were throwing rocks at me.” He continued. “I had nowhere to go and so I started driving back and forth, at some point the car stopped and they opened the door and began hitting us.””They hit us until a single police officer arrived and brought an end to the event”

“During the event I found a car that went over the pavement, which I realized was unusual. So I made my way to the vehicle.” Said the police officer who handled the event.”I saw that the vehicle had stones thrown at it, and seeing as it was an event that could put lives at risk, I found myself having to shoot gunfire into the air, I drove away the mob, rescued the those in the car and called for a rescue.”
