Under grueling heat conditions, Israeli marathon runner Lonah Chemtai Salpeter stopped during the women’s marathon while in 4th place in the leading pack, 4 km from the finish line.

According to Israeli media, Chemtai Salpeter experienced abdominal cramps which prevented her from being able to properly race toward the finish line.Even though she stopped, Chemtai Salpeter decided to finish the race and crossed the finish line in 66th place. When asked about the race in a press conference after the event, Chemtai Salpeter said “I’m fine now. The weather was not the problem, I had women’s problems that I do not wish to elaborate on. I was ready for this weather and we prepared for it in training.” “I expected more from myself,” she said, adding that “If I hadn’t finished, I would be a loser.”

“It was hard, but I wasn’t ready to give up,” Chemtai Salpeter said before she began to cry and the interview was ended.

The second Israeli representative in the marathon, Maor Tiyouri, who finished in 48th place, said after the race that “I wanted to start relatively patiently and that is what I did. We knew it was going to be hot and we dealt with it. We had an orderly plan of drinking during the run and I exercised it.”
“After about half a marathon I started having cramps that made me lose focus. They arrived at indefinite times and I had a hard time dealing with it. I went into a situation where I was just hoping to finish in the best way and I am happy with my result in these conditions.
“I came in 48th place and I am satisfied that I was in the top 50. This is my second Olympics and it is exciting, I am looking forward,” she said.
