Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz met with healthcare providers heads on Monday to accelerate the pace of vaccination in Israel, as almost half a million Israelis over 60 had already received the third shot while the number of serious patients continued to climb and stood at 360, 144 more than seven days earlier.
Some 3,372 new cases were diagnosed on Sunday. The number was lower than that of some weekdays on the previous week – when over 3,800 virus carriers were identified in 24 hours – but with a lower number of tests were processed, as typical of the first day after the weekend. However, the positivity rate stood at 3.87%, the highest since March.
During a meeting of the Knesset Law and Constitution Committee, Dr. Sharon Alroy-Preis said that some 1.5% of patients are turning serious – about half of the figure from before vaccines were available. However, the number of serious patients has been doubling every ten days.
A day after the full green pass system came into effect again – requiring a vaccination/recovery certificate or a negative test to access several venues, including restaurants, cultural events and gyms – Alroy-Preis said that the goal is to slow down the morbidity in order to buy time to vaccinate more people, adding that the purpose of this and other measures is to avoid a lockdown.

“What defeats the pandemic is the vaccines, not lockdowns,” she said. “A lockdown is a tactical measure. We are trying not to get there and in order not to get there, the pandemic must be slowed down by employing all the tools available – the green pass, the purple ribbon and caps on gatherings.”
The purple ribbon standards placed a limit on the number of patrons and customers who could access a business or a venue based on its size. At the moment, no such limits or caps on gatherings have been issued.
